Paula Marian earned a Master's Degree in Ceramics from Eastern Michigan University. She has been a potter for more than 40 years. Paula recently retired as Head Art Teacher at New Milford High School, where she taught Ceramics, Graphic Design and Advertising Art & Design. Paula was awarded a year sabbatical in 2005, which she spent as a research intern at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and as a student at Parsons School of Design (Decorative Art). She was on the Board of Directors of Studio Potter Magazine for 10 years. A yearly participant at NCECA, she has presented several papers to this professional group. Paula is a founding Board member (1990) of the K-12 National Ceramics Exhibition. Her interest in global ceramics led her to receive several Art Renewal study and travel grants from the Philanthropic Initiative. Paula has studied pit firing in Mexico, slip trailing in Romania, porcelain making in China and political art in Cuba. Author of articles for Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter News, Critical Ceramics, and The NCECA Journal, Paula has developed several Web sites and written a chapter for
Paula has worked with most clay bodies and firing temperatures, but presently uses cone 06 electric fired earthenware. Her work is both functional and decorative, recently with an interest in colored clay. Her travels and studies play a large part in her whimsical patterns and colorful palette. Paula has shown and sold her work widely. She has been a member of CCA since 1983 and enjoys the camaraderie and professional sharing with colleagues who have become friends.
